Accessible Emergency Preparedness Plans
Thanks to generous funding from the City of Laramie and Albany County, and at no cost to you, Peace of Mind now offers disability-centered emergency preparedness plans called Peace of Mind Plans.
Why Emergency Preparedness Plans Are Important and Why You Need One
Erica Mones, Peace of Mind Board Member & Disability Self Advocate, outlines a few reasons why planning ahead is important:
- People with disabilities are two to four times more likely to die in environmental disasters. They are also more likely to be displaced from their homes and face institutionalization as a result.
- People with disabilities face communication barriers, lack of accessible transportation, devices reliant on power, lack of education, and increased anxiety.
- They may need to include specific supplies with their Go Bags such as two weeks worth of medications, chargers and power cords for devices reliant on power, supplies for service animals or ESAs, and copies of any relevant medical information such as an allergy list, existence of hardware, and a list of conditions.
- They may struggle with knowing who to call during an emergency: make a list of people you can count on BEFORE an emergency.
- Emergencies can be unpredictable, but preparation puts control back in your hands. Start building your emergency kit today: your safety depends on it.
How It Works
Volunteers will work with you to answer a questionnaire developed by disability advocates with the help from local law enforcement, fire department, mental health advocates, and disability self advocates.
During the discussion, we will identify gaps in the person(s) natural support system and make recommendations to build bridges.
All of this information will be put into a written plan including:
- A hard cover binder
- Quick information guide for first responders
- Link for a digital copy to share with the person’s whole team
- QR code card of the plan to carry in your purse, wallet, or on a lanyard (extra cards may be purchased for $10)
- Postable instructions in a format based on individual needs
- Assistance with registering phone number and/or address with 911
- Annual Reminders to update your plan and to update your registration with 911
